A sterling silver bar brooch by Charles Horner of Halifax, stamped with the CH maker's mark and assayed at Chester — a piece over a hundred years old, in exceptional enamel condition. The elongated navette-shaped bar is engine-turned with a fine cross-hatch ground; at the centre, two Scottish thistle heads in green and purple enamel with serrated leaf detail, flanked by ribbed green enamel terminals at each tip. The thistle was one of Horner's signature motifs, and this is a particularly fine example of it.
